Facebook’s New Terms of Service
Posted February 17, 2009
Recently, Facebook changed, reworded, whatever you want to call it. Basically the wording says, whatever you upload, put on Facebook, all your content, etc, Facebook has a right to do whatever they want with your content even if you cancel your account. Read this article from the Consumerist.
Here’s my opinion… Whenever I upload things to a website, whether it being a social network, online album, I already assume that they have some small print that they are already going to do anything they want with it. This is why I rarely upload files to Facebook. Actually I haven’t ever uploaded pictures to Facebook other than my profile pictures. Well, does this mean you shouldn’t upload pictures? No, I think it’s a great place to share photos and I hope you continue to do so. Just, if you have a nice picture (basically something that you think you can make some money on), think twice about putting it up. Also, don’t be surprised that one day you see your facebook pictures on some random website because Facebook sold it as a stock photo for a website.

They’re discussing this inside the [b] school, and someone said that it doesn’t apply to photos. Not sure if that is verified though. I’m sure they’d *like* to be able to use your photos for whatever purpose they like, of course.
I only ever upload 750 pixel images though, so I don’t care if they profit a couple bucks off whatever use they might come up with for such a small image. I’m already profiting thousands because of the networking that goes on. “Tagging” is too valuable of a viral marketing tool for me to give it up…
But, like you said- Everybody should just ASSUME that these kinds of myspace etc. networking sites retain some sort of rights in their fine print…
