HP will ‘discontinue operations for webOS devices’

Posted August 19, 2011

Let’s just say I dodged a bullet.  Ready this on Engadget but HP is going is going to discontinue operations for their webOS devices.  This means that they are going to give up on the phones and tablet products.  A few weeks ago HP did a price cut on the Touchpad and then there was a deal floating around for an additional $100 off, bringing the price down to a total of $299.  I eventually didn’t get one because I couldn’t find the cheaper 16gb version and the Staples stores that I went to wasn’t going to honor the additional $100 off.  I’m relieved that I wasn’t able to find one but I am still hopeful that webOS will emerge with another manufacturer.  I still think that it’s a legitimate competitor to Apple, especially as it relates to tablets.  To be clear, HP is not getting rid of webOS (at least for now) but they are getting rid of the hardware products.  They are going to license it out.  I’m hoping that someone like Samsung or HTC will pick it up.
